The first cherry orchards in Door County were planted in 1896. The market for the fruit grew and 10,000 acres of orchards planted. Finding labor to help with the harvest remained an issue until the mechanical cherry shaker was developed. At first cherries were hand harvested and workers paid by the bucked. The new machine harvested 60 to 100 trees per hour and eliminated the need to recruit hundreds of workers each season. Cherries are turned into juice, jam, infamous Wisconsin red tart cherry, and the maraschino cherry that work so great in old-fashioneds and Manhattans.

Sometimes hidden in the trees, buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright haunt the landscape of Wisconsin. Taliesin holds forth in Spring Green offering guided tours while the Annuciation Greek Orthodox Church hovers in Milwaukee offering a futuristic spiritual retreat. Racine is graced with the Johnson Wax headquarters and Wingspread both commissioned by Herbert Fisk Johnson, Jr. about 1938-39. Family continues to run the company, but Johnson's house, Wingspread, was donated to the The Johnson Foundation twenty years later in 1959 for use as an international conference center emphasizing causes related to water, health, and community.

Another 1964 New York World's Fair pavilion that landed back in Wisconsin looking like a UFO vision. Designed for SC Johnson by Lippincott and Margulies, the Golden Rondelle Theater was reworked by Taliesin Associate Architects to be the "center for Guest Relations" for SC Johnson and opened to the public in July 1967. Seemingly derivative of Frank Lloyd Wright's Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church (below) in nearby Wauwatosa completed in 1961, the Golden Rondelle brought SC Johnson into the mod space age 1960s with its products protecting consumers from dust (Pledge!), stink (Glade!), dull windows (Windex!), stale food (Ziploc!), and clogged drains (Drano!). Meanwhile up north in Neillsville, the similarly galactic Wisconsin Pavilion, by architect John Steinman of Monticello, Wisconsin, once featured a replica of "The World's Largest Cheese" leftover from the Fair but it vanished years ago. The World's Largest Talking Cow, Chatty Belle, remains bringing us back home although her coin operated talking apparatus doesn't always work and her calf Bullet has been vandalized on numerous occasions. A gift shop featuring Wisconsin products from cheese to maple syrup, and a radio station operate out of the space.
